ONE DAY IN SEDONA:
SEDONA is a smaller town about 2 hours north of PHOENIX and 45 minutes south of FLAGSTAFF. We spent a day here on our road trip to the GRAND CANYON. The red rock formations were stunning and we absolutely will be back.
THINGS TO DO
MONTEZUMA’S CASTLE (Camp Verde, AZ; 30 miles/40 minutes from Sedona). This national monument is on the way to Sedona from Phoenix. It is one of the best preserved cave dwellings in the US. This was unlike anything I had ever seen before – and it was really cool to think about people actually living here. However, we were probably in-and-out within 15 minutes as there is not much to do other than look up at the cave. The monument is also very high off the ground so don’t expect to go in it or see it up close.
BELL ROCK – there are multiple hiking trails here, but you can get a great view of Bell Rock after a short 10-minute walk. Sedona is known for it’s vortexes and Bell Rock is supposedly the site of a very powerful vortex.
CHAPEL OF THE HOLY CROSS (780 Chapel Rd, Sedona, AZ 86336)– WOW. This was stunning. Not only is the church built into the rocks, but the views of Sedona from the church are incredible. This is a MUST SEE! The church is open and you are able to go wander around inside and check out the incredible views. Tip: We weren’t able to get a great parking spot so we did have to walk a short distance up a steep hill.
WHERE TO EAT:
INDIAN GARDENS OAK CREEK MARKET (Cafe, $) (3951 State Rte 89A, Sedona, AZ 86336). Great little cafe/sandwich shop! Make sure to eat out back in the garden patio – it is so relaxing. Great place to take a break from hiking and relax with a beer.
After our day in Sedona, we drove on to FLAGSTAFF. Wow!!! The views were incredible. If you are heading this way – make sure to do it in daylight so you can take in the views.
Watch the SUNSET over Sedona at AIRPORT ROAD. Tip: Get there by 7PM. It gets pretty crowded but there is plenty of parking. Directions: Take Highway 89A and turn left onto Airport Road, stop about halfway up at the parking lot.
FOR NEXT TIME: As we were only in Sedona for one day, these are the spots we want to go to on our next trip to Sedona:
SLIDE ROCK STATE PARK
DEVIL’S BRIDGE TRAIL
